  1. Our best show yet?

    Comment by Kris/Team EnglishPod — June 9, 2006 @ 5:27 pm

  2. Hi, Kris

Thanks a lot for your working first.
Then I am not sure whether it can be accepted by your team, for us who can’t read the draft, the vocabulary is a big problem. So is it possible for your team to spell the new words when you plan to explain it? Hope it won’t cause too much inconvience for you.

    Thanks
    Jojo

  4. Hi Tho, what’s up in Vietnam?

We’ve noticed lots of people signing up from Vietnam - are we famous down there?… if we take a ‘business’ trip to Ho Chi Minh City will fans come up to us and ask for autographs?

Hope you guys continue to listen, we’ll remember you.

  7. hammouda and mouhssine,

Great to hear from you. We’ve got a very international mix here at EnglishPod, with listeners from just about every country, including Morocco.

hammouda: we’re trying to give you the best quality business language. This is language you can use immediately at work. Listen to the podcasts and review the lessons and you’ll see improvement.

mouhssine: it will be great to get your point of view as a teacher of English. The language we teach here is based on the lexical approach. We rarely teach grammar; instead we give students lexical ‘chunks’, pieces of language like collocations and phrases that show students how to use the vocabulary they learn. See our blog to find out more about our approach.

Once again, good to have you both commenting.

  8. I’m from Shanghai, China.
So lucky to resceice the messages from On Demand English by chance.
It’s really a very nice platform for our english learners.
Thanks for the great job you have done and what you are going to do.

  9. Hi Feng,

How did you hear about On Demand English? You seem to have a good command of English - are you a teacher? Your use of the word platform makes me wonder…

For all of you reading out there, platform is a really high level word. It originally meant a raised area to stand on. Then it took on a new meaning especially for politics, of an opportunity to speak or a politician’s ideas and plans for the future. Now it has a lot of tech applications - we use it to talk about a thing or product that gives you the ability or place to do something. Some examples might clear it up:

He waited on platform #5 for the train.
Bush’s election platform displayed his ‘tough stance on terrorism’.
We provide an online platform for learning English.

Words like platform are difficult to know how to use until we see them in context. Sample sentences in dictionaries are great for this (the definitions and translations are not enough). Another way is to use a search engine like Google or Yahoo to search for the word and find thousands of pages where it is used - these pages give you the context - for you to find collocations and sample sentences with the word you’re studying.

  10. Hello Kris,

I’m from Vietnam. I found out your OnDemandEnglish 2 weeks ago when searching English learning websites and I coundn’t stop listening your lessons everyday. I was really attracted by your voice. If you can take a trip to Hochiminh City, either a business one or back-packing one, I’ll be more than happy to host you.

  11. Haha, that’s great!

I’d love to go to Ho Chi Minh City. Hmm… maybe I should ask for some time off work, or do some podcasts live from Vietnam.

    Thanks Y,

    Kris

  15. Y,

    You’re quite funny : )
We don’t have the exact lesson you want, but if you go to the persuading/influencing tag in the Podcast Archive (under functions) you can find some lessons with language to help you persuade people.

    Best,
